Sixth Form - Subjects - Art

Introduction

Study at this level will enable you to progress to Art College or University to practise or read the subject. The course has been devised to combine breadth and depth of study with the freedom of choice required to accommodate a range of abilities, materials, resources and staffing specialisms. You will be expected to engage in the creative process by exploring a range of ideas, skills and materials to develop your own visual explorations. You will be encouraged to work initially from direct observation in the studio and beyond to help identify your particular interests in 2D and 3Ddisciplines.

The study of appropriate artists and visits to local, national and international galleries will form part of your learning experience. Life drawing is offered to extend your drawing skills. As you build up your portfolio you will be expected to demonstrate a more mature understanding of how drawing can be used expressively in its own right, and as a means of recording and documentation. You will interpret and communicate your understanding of the world through the expression of your personal concerns and emotions. It combines work with English, Psychology, Media Studies and Sociology.

Sixth Form - Graphic Design (Art Graphics)

OCR

Introduction

The emphasis in this course, is on creativity in the manipulation of words and images.

The areas taught are Design (including typography and photography) and Illustration. ICT will also form an integral part of the course. When you have been taught the basic skills, the course will be project based and lead to a range of outcomes in areas such as book and magazine illustration and design, logo/corporate identity, information graphics, CD/video and cassette covers and advertising. Visual research will be important and this will include drawing skills. You will be taught to use a wide range of media.

There will be close links with the other art courses and you will have access to a fund of art and design history material. Corporate identity projects will provide the opportunity for three dimensional package and presentation design. The department works closely with KIAD and many students subsequently make successful applications to college and universities for Art based courses. You will also find that the subject provides an interesting contrast to other, less practically based, subjects. It combines particularly well with English, Sociology and Media Studies.
