English has six classrooms allocated for lower school teaching and a further two rooms allocated to Advanced Level English and Media Studies. Attached to the Media Studies room is an editing suite which is fully equipped for Advanced Level work. A large stock room is central to all the English rooms and Advanced Level rooms have a networked computer for use at all times.
Years 7 to 9 follow a Key Stage 3 National Curriculum-based course covering the three main assessment areas of Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing. The course covers a wide range of reading and writing experiences, using various materials including novels, poetry, plays, newspaper and magazine articles and other non-fiction material. Use is made of the library and a research project is completed in each year. In Years 7 and 8 students have a separate Drama lesson; in Year 9 Drama is taught within English. Use is made of ICT facilities for two compulsory units of work and additionally where appropriate. Homework is set regularly and is integral to the work covered.
In Years 10 and 11 all students follow courses in English and English Literature, leading to two separate qualifications. Both courses have a coursework element and final examination papers.
Two courses are offered at A/S and Advanced Level: English Literature and English Language and Literature. Both courses have a coursework element and final examination papers.
At all levels students are encouraged to use ICT facilities and ICT tasks are integrated into our teaching programmes.
