Sixth Form - Subjects - General Studies

OCR

Introduction

All students will take either General Studies or Critical Thinking in Year 12. The General Studies AS examination is taken at the end of Year 12, and students will then be given the opportunity to undertake the A2 in Year 13. In the case of students taking four or five A2 subjects, this would be without the need to attend General Studies classes. Lessons will largely be discussion and activity based and students will be expected to contribute their ideas. General Studies is vital because it enables students to continue to study a broad range of subjects beyond Year 11. The qualification often helps admissions tutors or employers to decide between two candidates of equal merit. The purpose of the course is to consider how to apply knowledge. No specific prior knowledge is required. Candidates are encouraged to apply with knowledge gained from other disciplines and to build on skills acquired during their GCSE courses. This is why students who are not taking Mathematics A-level for example, are still able to achieve an excellent grade.
