Facilities

Years 7 to 11 are mainly taught in 2 subject rooms. Most of the resources for these years are kept in these rooms. Both rooms are linked to the school network.

History and Politics in Years 12 and 13 are mainly taught in 2 subject rooms in the Sixth Form block. One room is linked to the school network. There is a History and Politics office, which houses most upper school resources.

Courses

History is taught in one hour lessons over a fortnightly timetable. Years 7 to 9 have 3 lessons and Years 10 and 11 have 5 lessons. For History and Politics in Year 12 there are 9 lessons and Year 13 also have 9 lessons.

Years 7 to 9 follow a National Curriculum based course. The course runs chronologically. The Roman Empire and the Middle Ages are studied in Year 7 and Britain 1500 to 1900 in Year 8. Year 9 study Black Peoples of the America and the Twentieth Century World.

Out of school visits are part of the programme for Years 7 to 9.

The GCSE course in Years 10 and 11 is an OCR Schools History Project course. There are 3 sections to the course. There is an In Depth Study of Britain 1815 to 1851, a Development Study of Crime and Punishment Through Time, both tested in examinations, and coursework making up 25% of the final mark. The coursework is made up of a Site Investigation and a study of a Modern World issue.

AS and A2 History are AQA courses. They both have a British and a European content. From 2008-9, AS students will study the Crusading Movement in the Latin East and The Church in England 1529-47. At A2, these students will study The Triumph of Elizabeth 1547-1603 and a Personal Study will be taught on the Middle East in the last 100 years. The Personal Study is coursework that makes up 20% of the final mark.

AS and A2 Politics are AQA courses. In Year 12 this involves the study of aspects of British government such as elections, the role of the Prime Minister and Parliament. In Year 13 the focus is American politics and a comparison of the British and American systems.

Out of school visits are also a part of the Year 12 and 13 courses.

Students in both History and Politics achieve good results.
