Unique opportunities for primary school students to experience what we have to offer at MGGS

Year 5 Taster Lessons and Year 5 & 6 Masterclasses

We are delighted to share with you our exciting programme of Year 5 Taster Lessons and Year 5 & 6 Taster Day Masterclasses at MGGS for parents/carers to book directly online. As an accredited Advanced Thinking School with the University of Exeter, the development of thinking skills is central to our partnership programme.

Year 5 Taster Lessons

Our Taster Lessons run throughout the academic year. There are lots of activities for girls in Year 5 (for academic year 2020-2021) in the Maidstone area and who are looking for a grammar school place. Taster lessons typically include:

Year 5 & 6 Masterclasses

Year 6 Taster Day Masterclasses (October annually)

These are for Year 6 girls considering joining us the following academic year. Students will have a unique opportunity to discover what life is really like at MGGS by experiencing taster lessons, meeting our Year 7’s, exploring the school during a normal school day and enjoying a free school lunch. Parents will also be invited along to share the experience with a talk and tour of MGGS at the end of the day.

Year 5 Taster Day Masterclasses (July annually)

These events are specifically for girls in Year 5. Students will have a unique opportunity to discover what life is really like at MGGS by experiencing taster lessons, meeting our Year 7s, exploring the school during a normal school day and enjoying a free school lunch. Parents will also be invited along to share the experience with a talk and tour of MGGS at the end of the day.

Year 5 & 6 Primary School Visits to MGGS

At MGGS we also offer a selection of ‘Primary School Visits’ (bookable only by primary schools) so students and primary colleagues can share in the MGGS experience and explore our fantastic facilities. These visits cover Literacy at Secondary, Science at Secondary, Thinking Skills Workshops, Food Skills (bread making), Design Technology, Product Design and WWII Tunnel Visits. Literacy at Secondary

November and January annually

For Years 5 & 6 most able students and accompanying staff members. Covering: reading, creative writing, non-fiction and journalism.

Food Preparation & Nutrition (bread making)

May annually

For Year 5 students: 9.30-11am or 1.30-3pm. Practical food session in which students can try their hand at bread making and learn about the functions of ingredients that make it work.

WWII Tunnel Visits

Terms 1, 5 & 6 Thursdays or Fridays annually.

A unique experience for students in Years 5 and 6 to experience what life was like for our students of the era in Maidstone during the Second World War.

Science at Secondary

February and June annually

For girls and boys in Years 5 & 6. Experience Science activities that you would not normally get the chance to see at primary school. These include making rockets, visits to The Woodland Walk and some explosive demonstrations!

Thinking Skills Workshops

November and January annually

As an Advanced Thinking School we warmly welcome students and accompanying staff members to attend a half day session. Students will experience and apply thinking models such as: Philosophy for Children, de Bono’s Thinking Hats, Thinking Maps, Thinker’s Keys and more.

Product Design – Block Bots

October, November & June annually

For Year 5 students: 9.30-11am or 1.30-3pm. A practical workshop session making ‘Block Bots’. In this session students will try their hand at using workshop machinery and tools to produce their own ‘Bot’ and show how creative thinking and use of imagination can be used in a practical way.

Students thoroughly enjoy new learning and challenges, and their achievement is outstanding.
