Black History Month and Beyond…

At MGGS we acknowledge and celebrate the rich diversity of our school community.

Last month we celebrated Black History Month through a range of assemblies, a tutor time activity as well as by encouraging staff & students to share their favourite book written by a Black author.

You will find below some photos with some reading suggestions -it is good to encourage us all to listen to a wide range of voices from all around the world, bringing together new perspectives on what it means to be human.

At MGGS we go beyond celebrating Black History Month – across many subject areas students study a wide range of influencers.

In Art, there has been a focus on Adebanji Alade, a British-Nigerian Artist; the students have been writing analysis of his work and creating drawings inspired by his techniques.  He is very inspirational and really personifies Resilience in his approach to life.

In History, students have been learning about Civil Rights in the USA (MLK, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, Sits ins, Freedom Rides, Watts Riots, Montgomery vs. Board of Education etc along with Civil Rights in the UK (Bristol Bus Boycott, Brixton Riots, Notting Hill Carnival). Finally, they have completed a homework project on a person from a list related to BHM.

In MFL we teach about the French-speaking, Spanish-speaking and German-speaking world across continents and cultures so that students can appreciate that learning a foreign language can take them places and appreciate a wide range of perspectives and cultures from as far ranging as Madagascar, Austria, Quebec, Cuba, Switzerland, Columbia and New Caledonia.
