Design Technology Food & Nutrition Enrichment Competition – Winner Announcement
Year 7 and Year 8 students were invited to take part in a recipe design competition as part of our Food and Nutrition enrichment activities. We had a number of outstanding entries that made it impossible to judge ourselves so we enlisted the help of a former MGGS student and published food critic, Leah Hyslop.
Leah is a food and lifestyle journalist and is currently the Deputy Editor at Waitrose & Partners food magazine. Her work has been featured in Metro, The i, The Times, Foodism, Eater and Londonist. Leah published her first cookbook ‘Made in London’ in 2018.
Upon judging the entries Leah stated: “I was really impressed by the quality of these – you can tell lots of effort and imagination went into them, and I really struggled to pick a winner. The dishes all sound delicious, and the designs are really inventive, which is quite hard for a recipe! I have judged the winner to be No Bake Cake by Brooke in 8N. I thought this was a brilliant all-rounder. Firstly, the design is really fun and eye-grabbing; I can imagine the MGGS cookbook looking like this!
I really liked that Brooke had gone to the trouble of shooting her own photo, and making it look so beautiful. I also loved the extra words she’d put on the page – such as ‘The best and easiest treat for everyone’ and ‘Enjoy!’ – they really enticed me and made me want to cook it. Finally, I think you could really tell this was a proper family recipe – it was nice to see the personal touch of ‘We like to use extra marshmallows and fudge pieces’ in the recipe text. Many of the best recipe writers put in a bit of personality like this. Well done!” Brooke will receive a Nando’s voucher by email in recognition of her winning entry – just in time to celebrate the summer holiday.
