Young people are annually invited to take part in the south east’s Young Cooks cookery competition with the winners receiving a share of £500! The idea is to encourage all young people to roll up their sleeves, get stuck in and discover how much fun cooking can be – while learning vital life skills along the way.
You will need to prepare two dishes, a homemade pizza (including the dough) and a vegetable based cake or dessert. You will need to include photos of the dishes and details of the ingredients, the method and the cost. The meal should cost no more than £10. The Young Cooks judges love to see local produce being used, so thought should be given to this. Next, the judges will ask you to write about a family recipe of your choice, please include the method and preparation of this meal and it should also be within the budget of £10 to feed a family of 4.
Finalists will be chosen based on their entries and those who make the shortlist will be invited to an exciting final. If you are invited to the final (which students from MGGS have been invited to previously!) you will be provided with ingredients and asked to cook one of your entry dishes. Added to this, you’ll also do a fun skills test, which involves following a recipe to make a very simple dish.
To enter, students from Years 7-11 should enter the secondary category and sixth form students should enter the further education category. Closing date for entries is the 18th April 2022. Please see further details and competition links on your DT Google Classrooms. Good luck!
