MGGS: A Happy, Healthy School
A Happy, Healthy School A Monthly Mini-Blog on Adolescent Health & Well-being
At MGGS, we know that being healthy isn’t just about eating your greens or going for a run, it’s about taking care of your mind and body in ways that help you thrive.
Each month, MGGS: A Happy, Healthy School will explore a different aspect of health and well-being, inspired by the Healthy Schools campaign, with practical tips to help students and families stay strong, focused, and happy.
From coping with stress and digital detoxing to making healthy choices and building resilience, these small changes can make a big difference to students well-being. The blog is written directly to our student audience but is relevant to all readers. Let’s dive into the first entry!
Beating the Winter Blues – Energy, Mood & Motivation
The Winter slump is real. The holidays are over, the days are short, and motivation can be at an all-time low. But your well-being doesn’t have to take a hit! During winter, we get less sunlight, which can impact mood and energy levels. One way to combat this is by getting outside, even just for 20 minutes a day, daylight helps boost vitamin D and regulate your sleep cycle. So even when it is wet outside, we encourage students to put on a coat and take a few loops round the woodland walk.
Music has a powerful effect on mood and motivation, especially during the dark winter months. Research shows that upbeat, energetic music can increase dopamine levels, helping you feel more positive and focused. This month, try creating a “power playlist” filled with songs that make you feel happy, energised, and motivated. Listen to it on your way to school, while studying, or whenever you need a boost.
A Happy, Healthy School Mini-Blog challenge : Create and share a Winter Mood-Boosting Playlist with your friends – what songs keep you feeling upbeat and motivated?
Another trick? Eat energy-boosting foods like bananas, nuts (not in school!), and whole grains to help you stay alert through lessons. And if the new term feels overwhelming, set small, manageable goals, breaking work into chunks helps keep stress levels in check.
Remember, it’s okay to feel a little sluggish after the holidays, but looking after yourself will help you get back into the rhythm of school life. And don’t forget, if things do feel like they are getting on top of you, you can always speak to your tutor, KS4 pastoral team or access support from services such as Kooth.com.
