Year 7 Assembly to mark the 10,000th sale of ‘A Schoolgirl’s War’

Year 7 Assembly to mark the 10,000th sale of ‘A Schoolgirl’s War’We were lucky enough to have Mary Smith, previous Headteacher of MGGS, and the author of ‘A Schoolgirl’s War’, visit the school this week to speak to Year 7 about life at MGGS during WWII. Our students were fascinated to hear about the wonderful history of our school and its war time tunnels.

‘A Schoolgirl’s War’ is an evocative record of school life in wartime, bringing together an exquisite and unparalleled set of paintings of girls at MGGS during WWII, and first-hand recollections of pupils who experienced disrupted schooling, air-raids, doodlebugs and lessons in underground shelters.

MGGS art teacher Helen Keen set out to record the life of the school as the war unfolded. Her paintings have never been published before. Those pictures and the vivid memories of the old girls, now in their 80’s and 90’s, both move and surprise readers of the book, which has this week sold 10,000 copies!

Should you wish to purchase a copy of Mary Smith’s book (it would make a fantastic Christmas gift) it is available to purchase for via the MGGS Shop:
