Year 7 Fashion & Textiles Batik

In a recent fashion and textiles lesson we experimented with the Indonesian technique ‘batik’. This is a fantastic, fast-paced, and unique lesson in which students learn how to use specialist tools to create designs inspired by their previous work. Our project is titled ‘The Fairy Palace’, and encourages students to take inspiration from MGGS itself. We are looking particularly at the architecture and outdoor areas featured within the school, which is represented through the mark-makings students have made through batik. Students had these comments following their lesson:

‘I learnt in this lesson that batik is a very detailed technique but when you get the final results of your work it is beautiful. In this lesson I enjoyed everything. I loved the technique and the colours we used and I would love to do it again. The key word I learnt today was tjanting (which is the tool we use to put the wax on the fabric we used). Overall I loved this lesson and I can’t wait for my next one!’

‘It was so cool to see the ink soak into the fabric but not show up on the wax. I can’t wait to see the fabric when we have the wax removed. This was a very fun experience.’

‘I really liked doing the batik way of design. I really want to be a fashion designer when I am older so it really helps me when you have to design the pattern/image first then add it to the fabric with wax. I loved doing batik designing.’
