Year 7 Drama – Ancient Greek Theatre Mask Competition

In term 3 Year 7 explored ancient Greek theatre in their Drama lessons. Ancient Greece is often considered the birthplace of Western civilization, the ancient Greeks were also the first people to dedicate a building especially for theatre. In Ancient Greece, the theatre was a very important aspect of society.

One of the key features of ancient Greek theatre were masks. In ancient Greek drama, all the actors were men. They wore masks to indicate the character that they were playing (e.g. woman, old man) or the emotion that they were showing (e.g. anger, sadness, joy). This year students were invited to take part in a mask making competition, they were asked to make a mask that represented a god, goddess or mythological creature of their choice. We had some brilliant entries, students had clearly put a lot of time and effort into making their masks. Year 12 A level Drama and Theatre students who helped to judge the competition were really impressed by the students’ imagination and creativity.
