#bloxhamsustainabilitychallenge Final - Highly Commended My MGGS

Our #Year12 team, taking part in the Bloxham Sustainability Challenge, have been working all year on their Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which is focused on “should the South Kyle II windfarm go ahead”. The students have been attending webinars from industry experts as well as working with a GIS specialist from @dalcourmaclaren . The team have completed a written report, individual log books and a presentation. After submitting their presentation, the team were 1 of 7 teams out of 30 to be invited to attend the final at the Dalcour Maclaren Headquarters in Bicester.

Teams had to give their presentations to a panel of expert judges as well as the other teams and teachers. Our team had the tricky task of being scheduled last to give their presentation. After watching the other teams give their presentations, our students presented their findings. They focused on Planning and Policy, Ecology and Biodiversity, Social and Economic and Landscape and Visual Impact. Each member of the team presented their findings as well as their GIS evidence and primary research findings. The team were complimented on their collaboration as well as their resilience when their presentation got interrupted by technology!

We are very pleased to say that the #MGGS team were awarded Highly Commended for their presentation. The judges said the following: #Maidstone used policy and guidance as a strong opening argument for approval of the proposals and maintained the theme of compliance throughout. Mitigations were well balanced, with a clear understanding of visual impact, noise, shadow flicker, and how these would be received by the local community. Strong technical skills, such as the use of ZTV functions in GIS, supported their innovative mitigations, and there was a thoughtful alignment of tourist impact alongside community investment.

Congratulations to Poppy, Matilda, Annabel and Tiz!

Triumph in the Mountains: Gold #DofE Success! My MGGS

Last week, our two Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award teams completed their qualifying expedition.

It was a tough 4 days, with a range of weather with torrential rain and gusts to contend with. The students had to use their navigational skills as they walked through Snowdonia, seeing the slate quarries and walking through spectacular scenery such as the Ogwen Valley. The students had to work together as a team cooking their dinners and supporting each other through the evenings at camp.

We are very pleased to say that both teams successfully completed their expeditions. Congratulations!

Product Design Spotlight: Year 8 passes the test of time with flying colours! My MGGS

Year 8 Product Designers have been working hard to complete their practical work, whereby they have been designing and making a clock in the style of a particular design movement. Here you can see fantastic examples from 8FG2, 8J1 and 8NS1 covering movements from pop art to steampunk, abstract to Bauhaus. Students have significantly developed their independent design skills and pushed themselves during practical work to use new processes and techniques to really bring their ideas to life. The overall quality of what they have been able to produce has been outstanding, with so many creative interpretations of the design movements. Well done #year8!

Year 9 Textiles take on Kew Gardens !

Our new Year 9 GCSE Textiles students recently visited Kew Gardens to immerse themselves in a world of vibrant tropical botanics, spiky cacti, and humid historic glasshouses. Armed with cameras and sketchbooks, they captured the incredible textures and rich color palettes of the flora around them to form the foundation of their new design portfolios.

Even a classic British downpour, which caught them mid-painting couldn't dampen their spirits! These determined artists pushed right through the rain, using the elements to their advantage. We can’t wait to see how they translate these brilliant primary sources into innovative fabric and print designs back in the classroom!

Fantastic and Fun Fireworks at St. Francis' Catholic Primary School My MGGS

On Tuesday, 9th June, Miss Paraskeva and Mrs Nolan from the Science Department #MGGS took chemistry to St Francis Catholic Primary School and completed a session with each year group from #YearR up to #Year6.

The sessions were designed to explain how chemistry is used to make the different aspects of fireworks. The children were super engaged, asked some great questions and enjoyed watching the experiments.

After the event, the teacher who arranged for the visit to take place, Mrs Hibbert, fed back the following: "All the teachers and children were very enthusiastic about the experiments you conducted. One of the teachers mentioned that their Year 6 class found the demonstration amazing and very engaging. The children in my class remembered the names of the elements you described - lithium, copper, and iron. Thank you so much for contributing to our Science Week in such an amazing way. I hope to see you again next year."

Miss Paraskeva and Mrs Nolan are looking forward to returning next year and already thinking about a new session to deliver!

Citizenship & Community Awareness by Emily & Pandora (featuring Helen Grant MP)

Emily and Pandora from 9C at #MGGS have demonstrated outstanding citizenship and community awareness by contacting MP Helen Grant to raise concerns about the parking situation faced by employees at Maidstone Hospital.

After learning about the challenges hospital staff experience when trying to find suitable parking, the students decided to take action. They researched the issue, discussed its impact on healthcare workers, and wrote to Helen Grant to highlight their concerns and ask for support in finding solutions. #HelenGrant has replied to the students and praised them for using their voices to combat issues in the community.

Their initiative reflects the importance of young people engaging with local issues and using their voices to make a positive difference in the community. This has been inspired by Term 5's Geography topic - 'Power of my Voice'. By bringing attention to a matter that affects many hardworking NHS employees, the students have shown maturity, empathy, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.

We are incredibly proud of their efforts and commend them for taking an active role in supporting local healthcare workers. Their actions are an excellent example of how young people can contribute to meaningful discussions and help raise awareness of important community issues.

Empowering Future Leaders: Exclusive Global Finance Insights at My MGGS #SixthForm

Inspiring - Insightful - Empowering

On Friday, 12th June, there was an exclusive talk and Q&A with Alexandra Merz, a senior finance professional with over 25 years' experience working at leading global banks, including Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.

Alexandra has worked in London, New York and Chicago, held Managing Director positions at both firms, and now advises clients on investments, pensions and wealth management. The pupils were fully engaged in the presentation and asked a number of very pertinent questions.

Ellie M wrote:
This morning, Year 12 students were given the exciting opportunity to listen to a talk from Alexandra Merz, an experienced independent financial advisor, amongst other roles - who was able to give a fascinating insight into Banking and Finance, providing information on entry routes into such careers for people in our year group.

She began by listing her impressive repertoire of experience and education, including Columbia, one of the 8 Ivy League schools in America, and working in Goldman Sachs, a world-class investment bank. Students found this talk both inspirational and engaging; with many now hoping to follow in her footsteps, after being given a greater understanding on pathways into careers in Banking and Finance.

Zachary T in Year 12 wrote:
We had a talk from Alexandra Merz about the banking and finance industry. She showed us how to gain access to the industry by having a higher level of education, which entitles getting a university degree. She informed us that we didn’t have to focus on traditional banking subjects like maths and economics. Instead, you must focus on a subject that we are good at. Having knowledge in parts of the banking industry is quite important as well. She gave a clear understanding that there is no need for over time where “people drop their pens at 4 and leave”. She informed us that it was a social place where you have friends all around you on the trading floor and how bankers are some of the fittest people, as they have a gym at the bank for people to do their exercises. Overall, banking allows you to earn millions of pounds over your lifetime and is a great way to make connections and understand how a business operates.
