Miss Stanley’s End of Year Message…

As with every year, the summer term has seen a lot of activity with annual events such as Sports Day, the Summer Fair, Induction days for Year 6 into 7 and Year 11 into 12, open events, KS3 celebration, music concert, dance performances and numerous school trips, both in the UK and in Europe. All this has taken place while contending with heat waves. I want to thank students for the good humour in which they carried on, despite the heat, and without complaining.

We have already been using the tunnels for primary school visits, which have been led so well by our team of Sixth Form Students and our Tunnel Team Volunteers, that it seemed a natural next step to open the tunnels up for our students to have lessons in the cool underground. It has caught the interest of the media with visits and interviews with #LBC, #KMTV and the #BBC.

The tunnels are open to the public during the last week of the holiday. Details are here mggs.ptly.uk/TunnelToursAllEvents

This summer will mark a historic moment for MGGS when both N block and T block are due to be removed. At this point it seems hard to imagine the site without these buildings, but once removed we can plan ahead of how the ground that is left can be developed.

At the end of this term, we are saying goodbye to a few staff. Of note, after 5 years at MGGS, Mr White is leaving to take on a similar role at Highworth Grammar School and Mrs Davies is retiring after 26 years at the school. Mrs Davies has been our Physics technician for all these years and her calm, organised manner will be missed by all of the Science department. We wish them both well in the future.

Year 10 Stepping into Sixth Form with Vision My MGGS

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Vision Event last week. We were delighted by the fantastic attendance, and it was wonderful to welcome so many #year10 students and their families. There was a real sense of excitement throughout the evening as students took their first steps towards exploring their A Level options by speaking with our Subject Prefects, Student Leaders and #SixthForm staff.

The evening gave students and families the opportunity to hear first-hand about life at our Outstanding Sixth Form, explore the subjects they are passionate about, and discover how we work alongside our students and their families to shape minds, develop leaders and secure futures.

We know that choosing to specialise in just three or four subjects can feel like a daunting decision. That's why we are committed to supporting our students and their families every step of the way, providing the guidance, advice and encouragement they need to make these important decisions with confidence.

Year 8 History Trip to #ypres & The Somme My MGGS

Between the 8th and 11th July 40 Year 8 students embarked on a powerful and unforgettable trip to the historic battlefields of Ypres and the Somme, exploring the landscapes that shaped World War I and left a lasting mark on history.

Over the course of the visit, students had the opportunity to walk through some of the most significant sites of the Western Front, including Tyne Cot Cemetery, Langemark German Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Hill 62, and several others. Each location offered a moving insight into the scale of sacrifice and the harsh conditions soldiers endured.

A particular highlight for many was the chance to explore both original and reconstructed trenches and tunnels at Hill62 and Vimy Ridge, which provided a hands-on experience of what life was like for soldiers on the front lines. Students were engaged, thoughtful, and respectful throughout, showing a deep appreciation for the stories and sacrifices behind the memorials.

One particularly special moment was when two students represented the school and laid a wreath in the Last Post ceremony under the Menin Gate. This ceremony is held every night and has been since the 2nd July 1928 (except when Belgium was occupied during WWII) and it is always a privilege when the school gets to take part.

Overall, the trip was both educational and deeply moving, leaving students with lasting memories and a greater understanding of the human impact of war. Well done to all who took part!

Year 9 #mocktails Mini Contest to Celebrate Summer My MGGS

Winners for presentation are Eva B, Josephine B and Autumn H, who created ‘Hawaiian Pop’ in beautiful rainbow layers, popping candy and a base of boba.

Joint winners for presentation: Aditi V, Gabrielle L and Fatimata J, who created a colourful ‘Sunset River’ in ombre tones of orange and red.

‘Sunset on the Beach’ mocktail was made by Myla Lee and Ava Syrett, who successfully came first for taste. Their blended mix of pineapple, passionfruit and strawberries and Boba, among other ingredients, was refreshing and zingy. We all enjoyed making and testing these original Summer drinks. Well done to everyone!

Year 10 Presentation of Tunnocks My MGGS

The winner for presentation is Mayble G with her creative puffa fish design. We had joint second place with Isabel V and Souad A. Isabel showed off her art skills and made a picture on a plate and Souad created a beautiful pattern of colour. All achieved a high standard of presentation skills and had fun in the process of making and eating their creations. These presentation skills will be useful in their future GCSE practical exams.

Well done everyone!

PSHE Day 5 - Fun in the Sun! My MGGS

Our latest #PSHE Day made the most of the glorious weather, with students enjoying plenty of outdoor learning, fun in the sun, and a wide range of engaging activities across the school.

Year 7 focused on careers, with students having the fantastic opportunity to meet former MGGS students. Speaking to both recent alumni and those who left many years ago gave students a fascinating insight into the different pathways and careers that can follow life at school.

Year 8 combined their PSHE sessions with practical first aid training before making the most of the sunshine with a game of frisbee, creating the perfect balance of learning and outdoor fun.

Year 9 explored the theme of civil rights, producing some truly impressive project work that showcased their creativity and thoughtful discussions. They also enjoyed an energetic game of volleyball in the sunshine as part of their wellbeing activities.

Year 10 spent the day learning about relationships and health, while also making time to enjoy the fantastic weather with outdoor rounders, cricket, and tennis. It was a brilliant opportunity to stay active, work as a team, and make the most of the summer sunshine.
