Les Enfants Terribles Immersive Theatre Workshop

On Monday, 14th July Elliot Liburd from Les Enfants Terribles theatre company came into MGGS to run a devising immersive theatre workshop with some of our GCSE Drama students. Year 9 started their GCSE Drama course 7 weeks ago and this was a great opportunity to work with a professional actor/director and find out about a different type of performance.

Immersive theatre is really popular at the moment, the audience is actively involved in the performance, rather than passively watching from a distance. It breaks down the traditional “fourth wall” between performers and audience, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Instead of a stage, immersive theatre often utilises specific locations, often inviting audience members to interact with the environment and performers.

Yr 9 started off by exploring status using the numbers on playing cards, they then moved on to discussing ideas for a stage version of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. The colour of the playing card indicated whether their character was a supporter of the Queen of Hearts or a rebel working against her. Students were then allocated locations from the story, in groups they had to create their own scenes introducing an audience to their space, move them through it and convey if they were for or against the queen.

Year 9 tackled the task with creativity and enthusiasm – thank you and well done to everyone that took part.
