The Hazlitt is alive with “The Sound of Music”!
Thursday 23rd October’s performance of “The Sound of Music” by the Hazlitt Institute of Performing Arts was a joyful celebration of talent, teamwork and theatrical flair, bringing the beloved story to life with warmth and charm. From the opening notes it was clear that this was a production brimming with heart and confidence and I was delighted to see so many MGGS students on the stage.
Leading the cast was Taya S (Y13) as Maria von Trapp. She captured Maria’s kindness and spirited optimism beautifully and with vocal poise, anchoring the show with a charismatic stage presence.
Daisy M (Y13) and Dylan J (Y12) were fantastic in their roles of Baroness Schrader and Rolf, each giving well-developed and entertaining portrayals. Daisy brought both sophistication and humour to the Baroness, while Dylan offered a compelling performance as Rolf, balancing the character’s playful nature with a growing seriousness as the story unfolded.
The Von Trapp children were a delight throughout, with Elsie B (Y9) giving a particularly charming performance as Brigitta, handling both the comedy and the character’s thoughtful observations with maturity and ease. Adding a touch of wit and lively personality to the household scenes, Alice T (Y13) gave an engaging performance as the housekeeper, Frau Schmidt.
Among the nuns of Nonnberg Abbey, Amelie C (Y12) shone as Sister Sophia, opening the show with tricky high harmonies that she delivered with clarity and confidence. Members of the ensemble brought energy and atmosphere to the stage, and it was wonderful to spot Nancy A (Y8) and Orla B (Y11) among them. The choreography was well-rehearsed, and their movement around the stage in even the largest group numbers felt polished and purposeful.
Although I did not see their performances personally, it was lovely to hear that Charlotte R (Y8) and Isla G (Y13) were also part of the production on an alternate performance date, further showcasing the breadth of MGGS talent involved in this show.
This wonderful production captured the spirit of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic with sincerity and sparkle. Congratulations to all involved for a thoroughly uplifting evening of theatre!
