The Only Summer I Want To Remember

The scent of sweet cotton candy still lingers in my nostrils. Sweet and sticky toffee truffles roam around my mind. Laughter echoed through the dense, summer air. It was the kind of summer night that you see in movies, suspended by the golden glow and purple skies, with just enough magic to make you believe it might never end. We had nothing but time then. The fairground buzzed around us like a fever dream; lights blinking in rhythms only hearts in love can understand, the distant clatter of games, the hum of old rock music ringing through the speaker system.

And that ride – the one that lifted us into the sky, our feet dangling above it all, our voices carried off by the wind. I remember how the air changed at the top. Cooler. Quieter. Everything below blurred: the carousel, the crowds, even the line of string lights overhead. It felt like flying, but safer, because your hand was wrapped tightly in mine. We talked about everything and nothing. Our future plans, wild and reckless, promises made with no expiration date. You said, “Let’s never let go of nights like this.” I believed you.

And though everything changed after that summer, the kind of growing up that leaves people in different cities and in different stories. I still go back to that moment every now and again. To the shadows of swinging chairs against the sunset. To the way the lights of the fair looked like fireflies in the dusk. To the version of us that felt invincible.

Out of all the seasons, all the years, all the memories – this is the only summer I want to remember because I had you.

Because for a fleeting moment, it was all enough. We were enough.
