From The Omnibus – Three Questions with…
It’s easy to forget that teachers’ lives go beyond the walls of MGGS. ‘Three Questions With…’ allows us a glimpse into the minds of our staff. Each edition of The Omnibus will include the three exclusive hot takes from one of your favourite teachers. To mark the revival of MGGS’s student journalism, we will dive into the thoughts of Miss Calvert, the Head of English.
If you could inhabit the body of any fictional character for a day, who would you choose?
A bit of a weird choice, but do you know this kids TV series called Bernard’s Watch? You might have grown up with it, I grew up with this show. It’s amazing. Bernard has the power of time, so he will take a pocket watch out, pull the stopper and freeze time. I need that power. So I either want to be Bernard or his watch. I need more hours in the day so that would be amazing – and, I mean, if I’m being a geek, I could get all my marking done and my planning.
Are the Harry Potter films really better than the books?
Harry Potter films are a must to re-watch every year. They’re a comfort watch, especially around November time for some reason, like right before Christmas. You can’t really enjoy the films in isolation, more so than the books, because all good films, the best ones, are based on books and then you’ve got to ask yourself – where did this idea come from? The universe that was written in the books. I guess I’ve also got a certain amount of nostalgia for the books, because I grew up with them.
What’s your spirit animal (but make it rogue)?
You won’t let me pick a domestic animal, because I was going to say a cat. I think I definitely have some sort of feline sensibility, so I’m going to go for a lion instead. I guess quick thinking and agile, maybe more mentally than physically. I know I can be loyal, a good leader, and brave when it counts – but of course, like all cats, I can be lazy too. Independent, coming and going as I please.
