Ella Dove Visit
Year 8 had the opportunity this week to meet and greet former student, author and journalist, Ella Dove.
Nine years ago, Ella lost her right leg in a freak accident whilst out running with her sister. She has drawn on her experience to write some wonderful books. Year 8 were completely engaged during the workshops asking some very insightful questions. Including, What is the publishing process? How do prosthetic limbs work? and do you get phantom limb syndrome? Ella was insightful when answering all their questions, demonstrating how her leg works and telling them about her accident.
Ella’s most recent book is about 13 year old Maya, who finds a bucket list she wrote before her accident. She is determined that her disability will not stop her completing her dreams, including learning how to roller-skate. You can borrow Ellas’ books from the Library or purchase from Amazon or all good book shops.

Each class had different activities to complete during the workshop. They either had to think about what a disability is. Coming up with a definition and thinking about what obstacles people with disabilities have to overcome. Or they wrote a bucket list, like Maya did in the book, How to Roller-Skate on One Leg. Some of these were quite insightful, wanting to have a house full of bungee ropes and trampolines, riding a horse, swimming with dolphins and passing language exams.
Thank you Ella for enriching our students’ lives. We can’t wait for your next book!
